I have a fundamental belief that the sole reason for government's existence is to take care of the people -- to guarantee that the people have everything necessary to support them in being healthy, happy, and successful citizens. In thinking about this, I realized that, in my mind, I have a government archetype, an idealized role into which government is supposed to fit.
Why do I hold such high expectations of my government? Because I grew up in the United States of America, with its wonderful and unique Constitution.
The Constitution of the United States
To quote the Preamble to the Constitution:
"We, the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
The few phrases highlighted above cover it all, fully encompassing taking care of the people.
In composing the Constitution, the Founding Fathers intended to accomplish this primarily through MINIMIZING INTERFERENCE by government in the affairs of the people, allowing individuals to decide on their own what is best for themselves and their families. They had experienced over-regulation and over-taxation by the British government, and they wanted to prevent this from occurring in their new nation.
I think the archetype of a government whose sole interest is in the well being of its citizens is consistent with the intentions of the Founding Fathers in designing the United States of America.
It is this type of government, based on the Constitution, that I find myself continually wanting to experience as the reality.
The entire combined text of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights is contained in a small booklet, one that fits easily inside a person's pocket. In very few words, the supreme law of the land was fully described. The Constitution outlines primarily what the government should NOT do, and in what ways government should NOT be involved in people's lives. So very few words were required. These fine documents were quite eloquently written. Should the need arise to modify these guidelines, provisions were made for amending the Constitution.
Compare this sparse text with the expansive libraries of documents that outline the laws and regulations that our government actually uses. Government has become a ponderous -- and expensive -- bureaucracy.
The Reality of Our Government When It Comes to Health
The health of the people is now essentially controlled by the bureaucracy of government. Government regulates, suppresses, and even prevents access to foods, supplements, therapies, and technologies that support health. At the same time, government allows, actively endorses, and even forces people to utilize or consume substances that are incredibly harmful and damaging.
They intentionally withhold important information about both what is healthy and what is harmful; and they purposefully make misleading and actively false declarations.
I am repeatedly stunned by this. It's like I am surprised with a whack on the head each time it happens. Because deep down inside, I believe that government MUST be there to help us, because that is their ONLY responsibility.
Here is an example. While reading Russell Blaylock's excellent book about MSG and Aspartame, Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills, with every page, I exclaimed out loud, "I can't believe the government lets them put this stuff in our food!" Even now, months later, I still can't believe that through its regulations and policies, the government essentially encourages food companies to put that poison into our food.
The archetype of government is similar to the archetype of the parent. Personally, I think that EVERYONE believes in these archetypes. Universality is what make them archetypes. Leading to the following pattern in thoughts/emotions/beliefs. "No matter what, the government (or parent) is there to support and care for me, guaranteeing that I have everything that I need." There is TRUST that I have in the government, like the trust I have that my parents take care of me, no matter what.
Then along comes the real life government's actions that are actively harmful. And my trust gets whacked. What amazes me is that I keep hoping that the government is going to do its job and act in my best interest. I really want to trust, . . . until my trust gets whacked again. There really is quite a conflict here, archetype versus reality.
How About You?
Look at this for yourself. Yes, you, the person reading. Do you believe in this archetype of government? Do you experience this conflict between the archetype of government and the reality of government?
I certainly find that people I know have conflict within their archetypal relationships with their parents. Despite a lifetime of being treated poorly by one or both parents, people just keep hoping that the parent(s) will wake up and start being loving and nurturing. The trust has been broken, but there is always hope that it will be restored, and that the archetypal relationship can be fulfilled.
I believe that all people have a similar desire, in fact a need to trust the government.
Ways That We Trust Government
When it comes to health, here are just a few example of the ways that we trust the government -- and of how this trust is misplaced, because the government is not actually acting in support of our health. If I have blog postings relevant to these topics, links to them follow in (parenthesis).
* We go to the grocery store and assume that everything there must be safe, nutritious, and supportive of health. Or the government wouldn't allow it to be sold. WRONG! (See postings about MSG, soy, fats, milk, corn. A genetically modified foods posting will be coming soon. Perhaps I will post about food additives as well.)
* We assume that the best, most nutritious foods and supplements are being made available to us. WRONG! In fact, our access to them is often actively suppressed. (See postings about milk. We are always having to fight to protect our access to nutritional supplements and herbs. The proposed adoption of Codex is part of this ongoing international threat. In Canada, Bill C51 is currently posing a major threat to free access to supplements.)
* We draw drinking water from the faucet, assuming that it is safe and supportive of health. If it contains fluoride, then WRONG! And chlorine does kill pathogenic organisms, but it also forms harmful substances and harms your body. So, WRONG! (A posting about fluoride will be coming soon.)
* We get vaccinations, because we are told by our doctors and by the government that this is important for our health. We assume that this must be true because that is what they tell us. WRONG!!!! And in some instances, people are being FORCED to receive vaccinations, again supposedly for their health. WRONG!!! (vaccination posting)
* We take cholesterol lowering drugs because our doctors and the government tell us that our cholesterol levels are high, and that we will die of cardiovascular disease because of this. We assume that the doctor's and the government's primary interest is our being healthy. WRONG!! In fact, it is more likely that all their prescription drugs will kill you. (cholesterol posting, fats posting)
* We take pharmaceutical drugs at the recommendation of our doctors. We assume that the government has tested them and proven them to be safe. WRONG!! (A posting about pharmaceutical drugs will be coming soon.)
A Sad State of Affairs
It has reached a point where, when I hear a statement about anything from the government, my automatic assumption is that it is inaccurate, a flat out lie, and/or that the impact of it will be negative. It is truly sad that my trust in the government has been so damaged. As far as I am concerned, the government is guilty until proven innocent.
In speaking with other people, I find it to be pretty universally true that they no longer trust the government.
Government has become something that is imposed on us, rather than being in support of us.
There is a vast difference between the two.
Better Off WITHOUT Regulation
I believe that we would be much better off in ALL ways if we had significantly LESS goverment regulation.
Now you may think that regulation is important, because it protects people from being harmed by businesses that are trying to take advantage of them. In my opinion, it is primarily the climate created by over-regulation that results in these kinds of advantage-taking situations. In fact, our government is 'in bed' with big business. The only ones who truly benefit from the status quo are big corporate interests (usually international) and the far-too-numerous individuals in government who are intricately and $ $ profitably $ $ tied to these corporations.
With all of the government mis-information that proliferates, combined with the mis-information that corporate businesses have been allowed (and even encouraged) to feed us, it is extremely difficult to distinguish the truth from the lies.
If we were to allow the business environment to operate solely on a free-market basis, then businesses would need to provide accurate information to the public about their products and services. Customers would research their options and make purchasing decisions accordingly. The success of businesses would be based solely on the quality, effectiveness, and value of products and services provided; the demand for those products and services; the quality of customer service; and the quality and value of the information and education provided.
Under these conditions, products and services that are harmful or ineffective would not be in demand, and would eventually cease to be available. The law of supply and demand is amazingly simple and effective.
Regulation would not be required! Free markets are self-regulating in nature.
So, What Can We Do?? Actively Participate!
First of all, HAVE HOPE. Damaged as it is, the government is recoverable. It is possible to reestablish a government worthy of trust, one whose primary interest is in supporting the health, happiness, and success of its citizens.
I believe that active participation in government by vast numbers of individuals is the only thing that can turn this situation around. The Founders of the country intended that all individuals would actively participate in government, on an ongoing basis. This does NOT mean that all people are required to hold public office, though any individuals who wish to do so are certainly encouraged to serve in this noble capacity.
It is the responsibility of the people, of individuals to do the following:
* Be educated about the issues that are relevant to their society.
* Make their opinions known to their government officials.
* VOTE!
* Hold their government accountable. Make the government follow the rules. When the government is not following the rules, remove the offending individuals from office and replace them! This is fundamental to the effective functioning of representative government.
Become informed! It's YOUR government. Become active in it!
